As a child, Paul watched his father show his family how to deal with adversity and the power of determination can lead to greatness and success. As a boy he watched his older brothers leave home for service in the military, returning to create businesses and programs that brought them great professional and personal success. As a young man he worked his way through college, pioneered applications for the world’s first business computer, created one of the world’s first computerized medical systems and advised executives of major companies and government leaders on the benefits that technology based information management can bring in terms of customer satisfaction, competitive position, increased revenues and profits.
Paul gained support for his visions from industry leaders in the airlines, entertainment, financial and telecommunications, built an International company and became the leader of voice services industry, setting the standard for enhanced voice services offered by telephone companies worldwide. Voicemail International introduced its trademarked service with telephone service providers in 14 countries including the U.S., Europe, Scandinavia and the Pacific Rim.
In spite of the fact that the dreams for his company were shattered by the outrageous behavior and greed of those lacking knowledge, experience, moral fiber who destroyed nearly a decade of invention, growth and profitability in a matter of months, Paul moved foreword to organize and lead the entire voice services industry to take its rightful place in history as a service that corporations and individuals worldwide would rely on for everyday communications and information management until the end of time.
Paul's trademark “Voicemail” eventually become the word spoken by virtually everyone, everywhere in the world. Paul was a cofounder of the International Voicemail Association and served as President for nearly 20 years. Paul was inducted into the SRI International Hall of Fame 50 years after his fiscal planning and management decisions avoided bankruptcy or sale of the company and profitability was achieved!
For a final entrepeneural achievement, Paul co-founded NetNumber Inc. providing network services to wireless operators worldwide via its global directory of telephone subscribers.
While constant travel was essential, Paul was dedicated to his wife Nancy and their four children with weekends and holidays spent camping, boating and skiing at Lake Tahoe where they bought a 2nd home. Paul eventually earned a Pilot's license with instrument rating and high performance aircraft rating. Weekly flights became routine from Paul's office at the Jet Center in San Jose in his private plane to and from Lake Tahoe. A flight to the annual Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque also was an annual event for fifteen years.
Paul and Nancy retired in Eagle Idaho, when their daughter Suzanne and husband Ross built them a "granny house" on their 5 acre hillside property. They enjoyed watching their grandchildren grow up, attending baseball and basketball games and other activities. After 70 years together, they always boosted that it's been a great ride!
